Fibromyalgia is a painful medical conditions that affects approximately 5 million people in the United States. This medical condition is much more common among women; with 80-90% of the cases being middle-aged women. It is a medical disorder that causes extreme fatigue as well as muscle pain. People who suffer from the condition have different points in their body called tender points, that hurt with pressure. Common points are in the shoulders, arms, legs, back, hips and neck.

About Fibromyalgia

If you suffer from fibromyalgia, you most likely experience symptoms like insomnia, morning stiffness, painful menstrual periods, headaches, numbness or tingling in your hands and feet, and memory problems and issues with your thinking processes. You may also have other medical conditions causing chronic pain aside from the fibromyalgia, such as inflammatory bowel disease, endometriosis or chronic fatigue syndrome.

There isn’t a known cause of fibromyalgia. It is linked to a variety of things, including repetitive injuries, illness, stress, traumatic events and some diseases. If you are a middle-aged women, you have the highest risk of getting fibromyalgia. It is more common in people with diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, spinal arthritis and systemic lupus. If you have a family member with lupus, it increases you risk.

Treatments for Fibromyalgia

The reason chiropractic care is often recommended for fibromyalgia is because it is difficult to treat. Often times, the treatment method includes a variety of different things, such as seeing a rheumatologist, chiropractor, physical therapist, and being prescribed medications by your physician. Lifestyle changes like improving your sleep patterns, eating right, and exercising are also recommended.

What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care is technically alternative treatment, but it is becoming used much more often for various illnesses and medical conditions. It is estimated that about 20 percent of adults have seen a chiropractor at least once in their life. These patients report they have experienced pain relief and their bodies function better. Chiropractors view your body as a connected system and tend to keep everything functioning normally, your muscles, ligaments, joints, bones and tendons all need to be cared for simultaneously. Everything should be kept balanced, otherwise you will experience pain. Chiropractors rely on manipulations, stretching and adjustments to accomplish this for any type of pain or discomfort, including for fibromyalgia patients.

Types of Chiropractors

There are two main types of chiropractors” straight chiropractors and mixers. The mixer is going to combine adjustment and manipulation techniques with additional holistic techniques, such as aromatherapy, massage and encouraging proper diet and exercise. On the other side, a straight chiropractor is only interested in manipulations, adjustments and certain stretches. Each of them is effective, but you might want to consider the pros and cons of each before choosing a good chiropractor for your fibromyalgia.

How Chiropractic Care Help Fibromyalgia Patients?

If you have fibromyalgia, you need to consider getting chiropractic care as a treatment option. Not only is it helpful for reducing pain, but it helps keep your body from loosing movement. Fibromyalgia is known to tighten your muscles, which can then lose their pliability and movement. Adjustments, stretches and manipulations can help you retain your body’s natural movements, even with this disease.

Since chiropractors believe that everything in the body connects, they typically start with making small adjustments to the neck and spine. With this, much of the chronic pain you experience from your fibromyalgia in other areas of your body, is reduced considerably. Other benefits of chiropractic care, like more body movement and less tightening, also helps you sleep better because you have regular body movement.

Keep in mind to fully benefit from chiropractic care, you will need regular adjustments, possible up to 3-4 times each month. Making weekly visits a priority is a good idea. This helps your muscles consistently remain relaxed, stretched out and mobile so you can keep moving them, reduce tightness and get plenty of sleep. It is also not uncommon to have to switch up the treatment plan with your chiropractor on occasion, in order to keep up with changes of the disease.

Manipulations

Aside from adjustments, manipulations are also commonly done for fibromyalgia patients. This is a technique that includes a swift thrust in the vertebrae of your spine, along with gentle pressure, turning and twisting. What happens is your vertebrae is manipulated and shifted back into place, which can relieve tightness all over your body and relieve some of the pressure you have been experiencing. Other benefits of manipulation include increased blood flow, increased production of endorphins and more pain tolerance.

With chiropractic care, you have the opportunity to get your pain reduced and have more motion in your body. But don’t ignore the advice of your physician; use these two treatment options simultaneously.



Bad posture is something that becomes habit, and when it is a habit it, we can suffer for it. Unfortunately, the result of bad posture is moderate to severe pain in your back, shoulders or neck. Bad posture can occur when you’re sitting in your car, sitting at your desk, watching television or even when you’re standing and walking around. If you often notice you slumping to one side or to the front/back, if you typically suffer from head and neck pain, or have lower back and hip pain, you may have bad posture-created problems that can easily be helped by chiropractic care.

How to Determine Your Posture

If you have been experiencing neck, shoulder or back pain, it is very likely from your bad posture. But before seeking proper treatment, you should find out whether or not you have poor posture. There are two main types of posture: sitting and standing. The best way to determine your sitting posture is to stop right where you are. Don’t think or move a muscle, just freeze. Now look and feel how you’re sitting. If you’re slumped over, your head is leaning forward, or your shoulders are rounded forward, you don’t have good posture. If your legs are crossed, it is also a sign of bad posture. If you’re leaning to one side or the other, it also means you have bad posture.

Now to figure out your standing posture. Stand in front of a full-length mirror and turn to the side so you can see your profile. This helps you see if you have bad posture or not. Look at your head, shoulders, neck and back in comparison to your legs. The following signs mean you have bad posture:

 

  • Your shoulders are rounded forward
  • Your chin is tilted up or down
  • Your head is leaning forward with your chin out
  • You are carrying more weight in the abdominal region
  • Your knees are bent backward or forward
  • Your back isn’t naturally curving inward

Bad Posture and Neck Pain

One of the first things you will notice after having bad posture for a certain period of time, is neck pain. This can be on one or both sides of your neck, as well as the back-middle portion of your neck. Neck pain is typically the result of leaning your head too much to one side or the other, poor shoulder posture or by leaning your head forward too much. If you are leaning your head too far forward, your putting too much stress on your lower neck vertebrae which causes neck pain and degenerative problems.

Bad Posture and Back Pain

Aside from neck pain, back and shoulder pain is also very common. Your back is constantly being used, even while sleeping. If you have bad posture while sitting or standing, you are making everything worse on your back and causing undue stress. It is negatively affecting your body’s mechanics and putting too much stress on the disks of your spine. The discs and ligaments are being pulled in unnatural directions, and over time, this causes severe back pain. Both back and neck pain is caused by a number of muscles being pulled, including the levator scapulae, subscapularis, pectoralis, suboccipital and scalene muscles.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

If you are already experiencing pain from bad posture, taking pain medications and starting to improve your posture won’t help alleviate the pain. It takes time and you need to realign your spine and vertebrae first. The best way to do this is see a chiropractor. They can help identify the problems in your posture and help analyze your alignment, movements and possible curvatures of the spine. Some of the things your chiropractor will look for are leveling of your hips, height differences between your shoulders, if you have a change in your stance, if you’re tilting your neck and head, tilting your pelvis forward or if you have an increase in spinal curvatures.

Aside from getting proper treatments from your chiropractor, you should also follow their lifestyle advice. This means making sure you are always keeping proper posture and visiting them often to check your alignment, getting regular exercise, stretching often and listening to your body. If you keep feeling pain, it might be time for another chiropractor visit.

Generalized Appeal and Safety of Chiropractic Care

Neck Manipulations

Of all the treatments patients worry about the most it is neck manipulations. They fear lasting injuries and generally tense up at this part of the alignment process. However, the rarity of injury from this procedure is only 1 in 5.85 million neck manipulations. This means that you are more likely to get into a serious car accident on the way to the chiropractic clinic than you are at risk for a serious injury from a neck manipulation. Knowing this ahead of time should ease some of the concern over chiropractic care’s most anxiety-ridden part of the process.

Just a simple input of their name can pull up a listing of their certifications and education. By adding the term “reviews” you can see what other people are saying about the doctor and read up on any complaints they may have had. This can help you make sure that your chiropractor is licensed and certified to do the procedures you’d like them to do and that others have found them to be a good asset to the community.

Go Over Your Concerns and Past Medical History

By making sure your chiropractor knows about your past medical history and by asking him or her the questions that are on your mind, you’re securing a great relationship with your chiropractor. They may use creams or lotions in their soft tissue work that you have an allergy to, or they may use other items that you found bothersome in the past. By open and honest communication you are going to insure that every measure is taken to keep you safe and sound during the alignment or soft tissue work you are seeing the doctor for. If new questions or concerns should arise after the medical relationship has began, don’t hesitate to bring them up.

Get Referrals for Added Assurance

Another way to  make sure you are getting the safest and most effective treatment is by asking the doctor for referrals. These should be past or current patients that you could ask questions and find out what they think of the practice. If a doctor seems hesitant to let you have contacts like this, ask why and do a more in-depth online search. Most doctors have a few people that they don’t mind you speaking with about their services.

One of the most common reasons people visit our chiropractic office is due to symptoms of neck pain therefore, we decided to write a post about it. Below you will find questions and answers about neck pain and its symptoms.

I woke up with neck pain should I be worried?

To answer this question we have to first understand why this has happened in the first place. There are a number of reasons why neck pain happens. For example your pillow might be too big or small, you could be over stressed at work causing your neck muscles to spasm, or maybe you’re suffering from latent effects of a minor soft tissue earlier in the day. The more important question we must answer first is this the first time this has happened? If it is we must find out is this a onetime thing that will improve quickly on its own, or is this pointing to a potential future problem. If it’s a chronic problem where you wake up frequently with neck pain then it is something that you should definitely get checked out by a professional. Here is a list of some of the most common causes of neck pain.

Muscle strains. A strain is essentially the overuse of the muscle causing pain and inflammation. Many describe this as a pulled muscle. A muscle strain can range from a minor stretching of tissue to even a full blown muscle tear.  Even very minor meaningless task can cause muscle strains. In our office we often see someone who was sitting at their computer to long, where brushing their hair, or simply looked over their shoulder and had a muscle strain.

Joint degeneration. Just like all the other joints in your body, your neck joints tend to undergo wear and tear with age this is known as degeneration. The more strenuous your job is the faster your joints will degenerate. Your joints can also degenerate from lack of proper movement from something as little as poor posture.

Herniated discs: Discs in your neck can take up too much space and press on the nerves branching out from the spinal cord.

Injuries. Rear-end auto collisions often result in whiplash injuries, which occur when the head is jerked backward and then forward, stretching the soft tissues of the neck beyond their limits.

What are my treatment options for my neck pain?

After your doctor or therapist determines the cause of your neck pain, they can appropriately design a treatment plan.  In the case of a slight strain or spasm, you might be able to get away with ice and rest for a few days and the issue will subside naturally. If you are having a recurrent spasm or strain which is very common in overuse injuries or sports related strains, your doctor will need to reduces the inflammation, break the spasm, and strip the tissue to prevent from further damage. At Mountain View Pain Center we do this through electrotherapy to move inflammation, and soft tissue techniques such as graston and ART to strip out the tissue.

Joint degeneration and disc herniations require further work than just a few visits. Degeneration of the bone cannot be reversed once the bone is degenerated there is no going backwards. The goal here is to stop the progression, reduce the pain, and achieve maximum function and movement from that area. In the case of a disc herniation or disc injury we typically give our patient’s two options, pain management or rehab to fix the issue. The reason for the two options is the natural healing process of the disc is 90 days so to go down the rehab process can be a 3-4 month treatment plan. The pain management option basically means you come until we reduce the pain, and then return when you reinjure the area. The rehab process we reduce the pain and inflammation, then move more into a physical therapy approach. This includes releasing tight tissues, strengthening the core, and healing the disc to prevent from further injuries.

In the case of rear end collisions or traumatic injury the doctor must look at the mechanism of injury and adjust the treatment plan accordingly. Not all injuries follow the same pathways, so must have specific treatment plans to properly address them. In whiplash or traumatic injuries there is typically a skeletal component and muscular component to each injury. Both areas must be treated appropriately to prevent from further issues.



As with many other chronic conditions, the cause of back pain in older adults may be very different than in younger individuals. Back pain may occur at almost any time during the lifespan, though studies indicate that that seniors and the elderly have a disproportionately higher risk for falling – which can result in debilitating pain. Research also shows that genetics play a role in disc degeneration, which can also cause pain. For elderly patients especially, an episode of low back pain needs to be evaluated by a qualified medical professional.

Back pain is discomfort felt in the back that can originate from muscles, nerves, bones, joints, or other spinal structures. Degenerative changes in the lower back are normal in the aging process. Discs lose water content, which allow adjacent vertebrae to approximate each other, increasing wear on the cartilage. Nerve roots may get compressed and impinge on the spinal canal, causing pain. Pain intensity can range from light muscle or posture-related discomfort to debilitating pain that greatly reduces the quality of life. The good news is that on most occasions, back pain can be successfully treated without surgery using alternative options such as muscle stimulation, chiropractic care and physical therapy.

The Prevalence of Back Pain

According to the Medical Expenditures Panel Survey (MEPS) – a study evaluating the impact of an aging population on back pain – the prevalence of back pain has increased by 29%, and chronic back pain has increased by 64%. The average age of adults with back pain has increased from 45.9 to 48.2 years. Expenditures on ambulatory services for chronic back pain have increased by 129% – from $15.6 billion (2000-2001) to $35.7 billion (2006-2007). Researchers concluded that the prevalence of back pain, especially chronic back pain, is increasing and will likely increase.
Back pain may have systemic causes, may be mechanical, or may be acute (sciatica). Elderly people with back pain most commonly have uncomplicated mechanical low back pain. The discomfort tends to worsen with stretching, twisting, walking, or bending. Acute radicular back pain (sciatica) radiates or continues down one leg in a way that is described as sharp, tingling, shooting or “electrical.” It can worsen when coughing, straining, or sneezing.

The Cost of Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most expensive health problems in the U.S. today. A survey by the Journal
of the American Medical Association
found that total expenditures for neck and back care increased by 65% between 1997 and 2005. According to the AHRQ, a total of $30.3 billion was paid to providers in 2007. The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that spine care costs reached nearly $86 billion in 2005, and that low back pain alone accounted for 2% of all physician visits in 2005.
