When you stand, you improve your posture and don’t slouch. Research has shown that extended periods of sitting on a daily basis will put you at risk. You’ll find yourself being less active and could be prone to diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and blood clots in the legs, not to mention nuisances like hemorrhoids. Scientists recommend that you include more standing and pacing in your daily routine. When you stand and you are on the move, you will be able to keep your weight in check and help your body to maintain healthy glucose levels. Standing at your desk for part of the day could help you to stave off diabetes. When you stand, you put less of a strain on your heart and circulatory system. You could avoid heart disease. Research has found that those who are more active and on their feet can reduce the risk of cancer. Switch to a standing desk and you could extend your life.

The Drawbacks of a Standing Desk

What Is Whiplash?

How Do I Know If I Have Whiplash?

Most often, the symptoms of whiplash are not instantaneous. Many times, the pain will not surface for several days. Those who suffer from whiplash complain of severe neck and shoulder soreness, tight muscles, and headaches. More severe cases of whiplash may cause nerve damage, ringing in the ears, and an obstruction of vision. Patients may also experience pain when attempting to rotate their neck and head in a normal fashion.

How Do I Treat Whiplash From A Car Accident?

After a car collision, patients can greatly benefit from seeking out the assistance of a chiropractor to reduce the level of pain and possible damage. Car Accident Injuries

There are many different injuries you can get following a car accident, depending on the type of collision you were in.  Types of Chiropractic Care

Manipulation Under Anesthesia – Most adjustments are done in the office without the need of numbing the area. Manual – Manual treatment is a type of massage therapy. It isn’t like traditional massage and works more on massaging your different muscles. This is typically used in combination with other treatments.

Continued Care – Chiropractors also help patients with continued care, such as in between visits. This includes showing you how to properly stretch out your muscles and recommended exercises. You shouldn’t perform rigorous exercise unless both your chiropractor and physician approve of it. Some back injuries require a period of rest before you get back into working out.

Whiplash injuries are a common injury, but one that can cause severe and sudden pain and discomfort. Whiplash occurs when your neck goes through an acceleration and then deceleration force suddenly. It most commonly occurs after an automotive collision, but impact sports can also cause the injury. Because your head is moving backward and forward at a rapid pace, it causes your ligaments and muscles to go through an unusual range of motion. Whiplash ranges from mild to severe, with multiple treatment options.

Causes of Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash is caused by any rapid movement (usually from behind) that causes the head and neck to snap forward and backward in a swift movement. It is common in a vehicle accident when you aren’t moving or going very slow and someone from behind hits you and is driving fast. Your neck goes into hyperextension which can then cause whiplash. Cameras have found that whiplash is mainly from the rear impact of the lower bones in the neck, called the lower cervical vertebrae, to go into hyperextension.

Symptoms of Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash Injuries rarely shows signs the first few hours, but usually in the first 24 hours. This includes a headache, usually as the base of the skull, stiffness of the neck and generalized neck pain, dizziness, fatigue, and blurry vision. Moderate to severe whiplash cause ringing in the ears, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, irritability and problems sleeping. If you have weakness, tingling or numbness in your arms, pain going to the shoulders and arms or you can’t move your head without pain, seek medical attention.

Conditions Associated with Whiplash

Before discussing chiropractic care for whiplash, you should first understand the different types of medical conditions and injuries.

Neck Pain – The most common injury sustained from whiplash trauma is neck pain. The majority of people getting whiplash will have some sort of neck pain. The neck pain may between the shoulder blades, in the head and radiating across the shoulders as well. Facet joint pain seems to be the common cause of neck pain.

Headaches – Headaches are also extremely common, and caused from a combination of the neck pain and brain injury that is caused by the whiplash. All of the other injuries tend to cause pain which can then be referred to the head.

Dizziness – Many people who get whiplash injuries also experience a good amount of dizziness. Like the other medical conditions, the dizziness is caused by the cervical spine’s facet joints becoming injures, along with the brain stem being injured as well.

Lower Back Pain – You may also experience lower back pain from the impact. Approximately half of whiplash injury patients experience lower back pain as a result of rear impact accidents that cause their body to move forward, then snap back.

Chiropractic Care for Whiplash

There are multiple treatment options available for whiplash, with chiropractic care being at the top of the list. The reason so many people turn to chiropractic care is because it is an alternative form of treatment that manipulates the spine and neck to improve the condition as minimally invasive as possible.

Chiropractic care for whiplash injuries uses manipulation of the spine to improve the position of the vertebrae in the spine and restore the movement in this part of the body. For many patients, it is the best way they received recovery, often used in conjunction with physical therapy or massage therapy. Soft tissue rehabilitation may also be needed as this helps improve the ligaments, tendons, muscles, spinal discs and organs that can be affected by a whiplash injury.

Length of Recovery from whiplash

Whiplash injuries tend to heal completely in about 6-9 months. While this seems like a long time, it depends on the severity of pain experienced. You may start feeling relief from your pain within a few days or even weeks, but a full 6 months is needed for complete recovery. This is why chiropractic care is often required for continued treatments. Someone who has severe whiplash injuries will need care for a year or longer.

If you have recently been in an accident and were diagnosed with whiplash, follow your doctor’s orders, but also consider trying alternative treatments like chiropractic care. You can combine this type of treatment with others, such as medications prescribed for the pain, acupuncture, massage therapy and physical therapy. Chiropractic care helps realign your body and manipulate your spine to speed up the recovery time. If after 6 months there is no change, visit your doctor to discuss further options.

Bad posture is something that becomes habit, and when it is a habit it, we can suffer for it. Unfortunately, the result of bad posture is moderate to severe pain in your back, shoulders or neck. Bad posture can occur when you’re sitting in your car, sitting at your desk, watching television or even when you’re standing and walking around. If you often notice you slumping to one side or to the front/back, if you typically suffer from head and neck pain, or have lower back and hip pain, you may have bad posture-created problems that can easily be helped by chiropractic care.

How to Determine Your Posture

If you have been experiencing neck, shoulder or back pain, it is very likely from your bad posture. But before seeking proper treatment, you should find out whether or not you have poor posture. There are two main types of posture: sitting and standing. The best way to determine your sitting posture is to stop right where you are. Don’t think or move a muscle, just freeze. Now look and feel how you’re sitting. If you’re slumped over, your head is leaning forward, or your shoulders are rounded forward, you don’t have good posture. If your legs are crossed, it is also a sign of bad posture. If you’re leaning to one side or the other, it also means you have bad posture.

Now to figure out your standing posture. Stand in front of a full-length mirror and turn to the side so you can see your profile. This helps you see if you have bad posture or not. Look at your head, shoulders, neck and back in comparison to your legs. The following signs mean you have bad posture:


  • Your shoulders are rounded forward
  • Your chin is tilted up or down
  • Your head is leaning forward with your chin out
  • You are carrying more weight in the abdominal region
  • Your knees are bent backward or forward
  • Your back isn’t naturally curving inward

Bad Posture and Neck Pain

One of the first things you will notice after having bad posture for a certain period of time, is neck pain. This can be on one or both sides of your neck, as well as the back-middle portion of your neck. Neck pain is typically the result of leaning your head too much to one side or the other, poor shoulder posture or by leaning your head forward too much. If you are leaning your head too far forward, your putting too much stress on your lower neck vertebrae which causes neck pain and degenerative problems.

Bad Posture and Back Pain

Aside from neck pain, back and shoulder pain is also very common. Your back is constantly being used, even while sleeping. If you have bad posture while sitting or standing, you are making everything worse on your back and causing undue stress. It is negatively affecting your body’s mechanics and putting too much stress on the disks of your spine. The discs and ligaments are being pulled in unnatural directions, and over time, this causes severe back pain. Both back and neck pain is caused by a number of muscles being pulled, including the levator scapulae, subscapularis, pectoralis, suboccipital and scalene muscles.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

If you are already experiencing pain from bad posture, taking pain medications and starting to improve your posture won’t help alleviate the pain. It takes time and you need to realign your spine and vertebrae first. The best way to do this is see a chiropractor. They can help identify the problems in your posture and help analyze your alignment, movements and possible curvatures of the spine. Some of the things your chiropractor will look for are leveling of your hips, height differences between your shoulders, if you have a change in your stance, if you’re tilting your neck and head, tilting your pelvis forward or if you have an increase in spinal curvatures.

Aside from getting proper treatments from your chiropractor, you should also follow their lifestyle advice. This means making sure you are always keeping proper posture and visiting them often to check your alignment, getting regular exercise, stretching often and listening to your body.
