What Kind of Massage are You Looking for?

Massage Therapy Overview

There are many different types of massage, both those offered at spas and massage parlors, as well as massages and therapies by chiropractors and licensed massage therapists. They range from relaxation and muscle tension relief, to recovery from injuries like whiplash and sports injuries.

We know it can be hard to find a great massage therapist. At Mountain View Pain Center, our massage therapists provide doctor prescribed care to all of our patients and are highly trained in Swedish massage, deep tissue, trigger point therapy, structural, craniosacral, sport injury, whiplash injury, neuromuscular massage, and pre-natal care.

Swedish Massage

This is a great choice if you are unsure of what type of massage you need done, and just want to get all over body care.

A Swedish massage is one of the more popular types of massage that is available. This type of massage is meant to relax each area of the body, providing excellent relaxation and releasing muscle tension. The Swedish massage is done with long strokes in order to encourage proper blood flow to the heart. People who have gotten a Swedish massage not only mention the relaxing benefits from it, but therapeutic benefits as well. This includes less stress, a built-up immune system with fewer colds and illnesses, and even preventative measures for the future. Most standard Swedish massages from chiropractors last between 45 minutes and an hour.

Deep Tissue Massage

A great massage for muscle and body pain.

The deep tissue massage isn’t too far off from a Swedish massage, except with some minor variations. Like the Swedish massage, a deep tissue massage is focused on relaxing the body and working through aching and tried muscles. However, it is better for muscle and body pain because it uses a deeper pressure that gets to the deeper layers of muscle tissue in order to provide muscle tension relief. Studies performed by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found this type of massage to be excellent for lowering blood pressure, as long as it was for 45-60 minutes minimum.

Trigger Point Therapy

This type of massage targets a single point of pain such as the neck or back.

Trigger point therapy massage is intended for people that struggle with body pain as a result of a single point of pain. This point of pain is called a trigger point, and it is an area of tightness deep in the muscle tissues that can cause pain and discomfort throughout other parts of the body.

As chiropractors that are focused on massage therapy we see this can be anything from neck and shoulder pain, to intense back pain that becomes debilitating. With trigger point therapy, the massage therapist uses techniques that help provide pressure and release for the trigger point, hopefully resulting in overall pain relief.

Relief is often experienced after the first treatment, though multiple treatments are encouraged. Trigger point therapy can be done for those with receptive pain such as those with fibromylagia.

Structural Massage

This type of massage helps with muscle tension and pain, thereby reducing stress.

For skeletal system and structural issues, there is a special type of massage called structural massage. With this type of massage, toxins are removed from your muscular system, allowing your ligaments, muscles and tendons to be lengthened and returned to their original state. It can help with muscle tension and pain, as well as proper alignment and posture.

One of the best benefits of structural massage is reducing stress, as this is often the cause of the toxins building up in your muscles. Structural massage may be provided by a spa, though most often is offered by chiropractors and massage therapists.

Cranial Sacral

A great massage if you have pain or discomfort in your neck, head, shoulders, or back.

If you have pain or discomfort in your neck, head, shoulders or back, it is likely from a chronic injury or sufficient stress in these areas. People who work with computers or at an office can typically fall victim to this type of stress and strain. There is a type of body massage to help with this condition called cranial sacral.

Cranial sacral massage is a type of massage therapy that is non-invasive and very gentle, helping with the sacrum, spinal column, and the bones in your head. It can alleviate physical and emotional stress, pain, and discomfort.

It is also an excellent alternative treatment if you suffer from headaches or particularly, migraines, which have very little treatment options. Many people get this type of massage specifically for the headache relief.

Sport Injury Massage

The best massage if you suffer from any type of sports or activity-related pain or discomfort.

Sports injuries are very common, regardless of the types of sports you participate in. From professional NFL players to weekend joggers, sports injuries can occur even if you are careful. While you will want to see your regular physician for injuries, you often experience chronic pain or discomfort even after the primary treatment has been received.

For these types of injuries, seeking out massage from a licensed chiropractor is a great option. Sport injury massage has many benefits, including preventing future injuries, reducing physical stress and fatigue, and even improving your endurance. If you have any type of sports or activity-related pain or discomfort, find a massage chiropractor that handles these injuries and ask for a sport injury massage.

Whiplash Injury Massage

This massage provides bodywork that helps work through your muscles to release tension from a whiplash injury.

Whiplash is a very common injury in vehicle accidents and other accidents where body is jolted forward, then backward, in a rapid motion. Most people can recover from whiplash on their own in a month or so, but you might notice some of your symptoms remain, such as stress and pain in your neck, shoulder and upper back.

With whiplash injury massage, you are able to get bodywork that helps work through your muscles to release tension. Different methods are used for whiplash injuries, including static compression and myofascial release. The deep tissue massage mentioned previously is also great for whiplash injuries.

Neuromuscular Massage

A type of massage that is excellent for lower back pain.

Another type of therapeutic massage is neuromuscular massage, which is a type of massage therapy for the lower back, as well as being trigger point myotherapy. This massage therapy is excellent for back pain, particularly from a soft tissue injury.

Soft tissue injuries include muscle strain and injuries of the back from overuse. In this method, the massage therapist uses a combination of techniques, including using the elbow, fingers and knuckles to add pressure to the lower back. It is also applies to muscle spasms. For severe muscle spasms, the therapist will be as gentle as possible during the massage.

Pre-Natal Care Massage

A terrific massage to help with physical ailments of pregnancy such as swelling, headaches, leg pain, and cramps.

Massage is not only safe during pregnancy, but highly recommended as part of a wellness plan during pregnancy. Prenatal care massage can help with the physical ailments of pregnancy, including swelling, headaches, leg pain and cramps, stiff neck, and backaches.

The massage helps reduce stress on the joints, improves blood circulation, and can help with sleep and reduction in anxiety and depression. It is important to always let your massage therapist know that you are pregnant and any details they need to know when scheduling a prenatal care massage.

  • One of the best chiropractors I have ever been to. I came in with back pain that traveled down the back of my leg and was having a really hard time walking, sitting, and standing. They spent extra time with me to make sure I understood why I was having pain. There front desk people are really helpful and Brandi and Jen there massage therapist are the best. Most importantly they took my insurance. My husband now goes to them and also agrees with me. I would highly recommend them if you are in pain.
